Established in 1866 by Swedish immigrants, the city officially etains the most dense population of Swedish Americans in the country. Many of these early Swedes arrived from New England, and most of them were Puritans.

Incorporated in 1877, the city was home to many remarkable businesses, including a potato starch factory as well as a flour mill. Additionally, there were  plants that specialized in wood and electric lighting. Some of the earliest telephone systems could also be found in the area at that time.

Many know Cambridge for the big box stores on the northwest side of the city limits. The area provides convenient shopping, and it is dotted with lakes and parks for family fun. A great deal of parkland can be found along the Rum River on the west side as well as in North Industrial Park. 

Watersports including boating and canoeing are popular in the area. The city's downtown district is also charming, and another major attraction is the large, multipurpose Richard G. Hardy Performing Arts Center.
