Cologne was incorporated in 1881 and named after Cologne, Germany, which was the former home of many of the area's earliest settlers. It merged with its neighboring Benton ten years later.

Benton was officially annexed nearly 100 years later as the area bloomed.

Cologne's largely German-American population was the subject of the film Cologne: From the Diary of Ray and Esther, which is one of few amateur films on the National Film Registry. It documents the experiences of the community prior to America's entry into World War II.
