An Introduction to Stillwater, MN

Often considered the birthplace of Minnesota, the city of Stillwater was home to nearly 20000 people in 2016. The city is known for its breathtaking views of the St. Croix River as well as its historic hilltop neighborhoods.

A Brief History of Stillwater, MN

Beginning in 1837, settlement was allowed in the St. Croix Valley due to U.S. government treaties with the Native tribes local to the area. By 1848, Stillwater was chosen to be the location for a convention to ultimately establish Minnesota as a state. Ten years later, statehood became official.

Stillwater grew quickly due to its lumber industry. Sawmills and steamboats were active daily as the logs floating down the river were collected just outside of town. Additionally, the city was chosen as the site for the area's first prison.

Location

The geographical layout of Stillwater is remarkable in the steep grade of its hills along the riverfront. Many historical mansions can be found in the spots with the most scenic overlooks. Homes with price tags of $1 million or more can be found concentrated in the downtown area, as well.

New developments are popping up throughout the city, and large homes on spacious lots have been listed at $1 million or more.

Schools in Stillwater, MN

A total of nine public schools serve the city of Stillwater, including Stillwater Area High School. According to Niche.com, the high school was ranked 41 for best public high schools in the state.

The city also has two private options: one Lutheran and one Catholic.

Things to do in Stillwater, MN

Stillwater's downtown district is bustling both day and night. With shopping, restaurants, nightclubs, and the expansive riverfront, the city attracts a great deal of foot traffic from both locals and visitors.
