The Lake Elmo area has a history that stretches back to the middle of the 19th century, when the first settlers established a stage stop known as Lake House. Alongside a hotel and a tavern, it was found just south of Sunfish Lake, which lies in the center of a chain of lakes running through the city as its known today.
Lake Elmo is named after the largest lake in the area. Prior to its incorporation in 1972, the area was an industrial extension of Oakdale Township and, later, East Oakdale.
