The small city of Lake Elmo has a population of roughly 8800 people. Located northeast of St. Paul, it is composed primarily of farmland.
However, Lake Elmo is projected to expand greatly in population over the coming years for a number of reasons, including projected city planning revisions.
As of 2016, the median property value was reported to be approximately $410000, which was a nearly five percent increase over the year prior. The city is highly rated among the best suburbs in the state.
The Lake Elmo area has a history that stretches back to the middle of the 19th century, when the first settlers established a stage stop known as Lake House. Alongside a hotel and a tavern, it was found just south of Sunfish Lake, which lies in the center of a chain of lakes running through the city as its known today.
Lake Elmo is named after the largest lake in the area. Prior to its incorporation in 1972, the area was an industrial extension of Oakdale Township and, later, East Oakdale.
Due to the area's many lakes, some of the best locations are found in close proximity to waterfronts. Additionally, homes on top of lots with high acreage demonstrate the greatest value.
New residential developments near Horseshoe Lake and the Royal Golf Club feature a number of newly built homes valued between $750000 and $2 million.
Lake Elmo's schools are highly rated, and the city itself is ranked as one of the best suburbs to raise a family in Minnesota. A total of 17 schools serve the area, and Mahtomedi's middle and senior high schools have excellent reputations.
According to Niche.com, Mahtomedi Senior High was ranked as the 15th best public high school in the state, and Mahtomedi Middle School was ranked as the 23rd best public middle school in the state.
With its far reaching open spaces, Lake Elmo celebrates a large amount of parkland. The Lake Elmo Park Reserve is filled with trails of all types, and its swimming pond is paired with a shower house. In the winter an indoors ski center provides plenty of comfort for the cross country skiers who flock to the trails.
The city prides itself in its park system, and recreation of all types are popular throughout Lake Elmo. Lake Elmo also has three golf courses, a drive-in theater, and a selection of restaurants.
