As a small city in Hennepin County, Long Lake can be found along U.S. Highway 12 just north of Lake Minnetonka. A drive into the heart of Minneapolis from Long Lake takes approximately 20 minutes. Overall, the city is less than a square mile in size.
In 2017, Long Lake's population amounted to 1700 people with an average age of 45 years. The median household income at that time was $75000-plus.
The area's first settlers arrived in approximately 1855. Many of them were Nova Scotians who lived off the land and fished the lakes.
A sawmill was among the first businesses in the area, prior to the arrival of the railroad. Soon thereafter, a general store as well as a flour mill and hotel were established.
In 1906, Long Lake was incorporated.
Many fine homes can be found scattered throughout the countryside of Long Lake, and new builds can demand prices in the millions. Prices are high for new homes near Long Lake Beach, as well.
The median property value of Long Lake, in 2018, was reported to be more than $275000.
Ranked by Niche.com as number 2667 on the list of best places to raise a family in America, Long Lake has schools that are undoubtedly going to perform well. The five schools serving the city are all A-rated, including the A-plus Orono High School.
Long Lake features lakeside dining as well as other restaurant experiences. Nelson Lakeside Park can be found off the western shore of the lake for which the city is named.
Also worth mentioning is the Western Hennepin History Center, which exhibits vintage instruments, textiles and more alongside various recreations, including a general store.
