Its lakes were plentiful with fish. It was there that the Native people traded with white settlers, and by 1853, the region became established as a popular waypoint.

Originally designated as Hamburg Township, the locals changed the name to Medina in 1858, which originates from the name of the holy city in Saudi Arabia. The city became a township, then a village, and was incorporated as a city in 1974.
