Located centrally between the St. Paul capital and downtown Minneapolis, Mendota is a miniscule city with a population of just 250 people. The city itself stretches less than a quarter mile from end to end. It lies on the fork separating the Minnesota River and the Mississippi River.

The city of Mendota gets its name from the Dakota lexicon, with its definition being a rough translation for “riverfork.” Today, it is home to the Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Community, which is the only Native community in the U.S. not recognized by the federal government.
Mendota was one of the first permanent settlements in the State of Minnesota, and its history goes back to roughly 1812 when it was known for its trading post – where early European settlers and Natives would exchange furs among other things.
Few of the properties in the city lie along the river. Instead, they are tucked into the small neighborhoods.

Some of Mendota's best spots can be attributed to the city's rich history. The Henry Hastings Sibley house as well as the Jean-Baptiste Faribault house are a sight to behold. Other historical sites include the American Fur Company as well as other original Mendota buildings. Many of these homes are built from the Limestone located along the river's bluffs.
Additionally, the city is bisected by the Big Rivers Regional Trail, which is popular for walkers, runners and cyclists.
