Minnetrista can be found 25 miles west of the Minneapolis metro and on a 31-square-mile plot of land north of Lake Minnetonka. As of 2017, its 7400 residents had an average age of 43.

Much of Minnetrista’s development can be traced to the 19th century when the Dakota Tribe settled near the bountiful waters of Lake Minnetonka. Minnetrista, roughly translated, means “bent waters.”
Once trappers and loggers discovered the area, it became a destination for trading posts as well as some of the area's earliest and most popular hotels. Minnetrista was mainly woodland until the 20th century, and it was unincorporated until 1971.
