The bluffs and riverfront of Red Wing, MN, are among the most beautiful in the Midwest, which has attracted many to the city as well as its surrounding areas for centuries. The city can be found along the Mississippi River approximately 47 miles southeast of the state capital.

A Brief History of Red Wing, MN

Many of the first people to arrive in Red Wing traveled via steamboat in the mid-19th century. These settlers were primarily farmers, millers and craftsmen  arriving from various European countries, including Germany and Sweden.

In 1854, it was home to Hamline University, – the state's first institution of higher education. In 1873, Red Wing emerged as the country's leader in wheat production.

Once the city connected with the flour mills of the Minneapolis metro, the city boomed. It became widely known for its manufacturers who specialized in footwear, ice skates and stoneware.

Many fine homes can be found mainly on the northern side of Red Wing. The city's median property value was approximately $170000, but large mansions from the 19th century can demand prices between $500000 and $900000.

Also, the views in the city are breathtaking, and many partake in the overlook atop Barn Bluff. The city features a number of remarkable parks for those who enjoy the outdoors, as well, with Colvill Park being one of its most popular.

Many also choose to visit the Red Wing Shoe Store & Museum – home of the world's largest work boot – as well as the Pottery Museum of Red Wing, which exhibits some of the nation's oldest commercial ceramics.
