Found approximately five miles south of St. Paul, Sunfish Lake is a small city with a population of 500-plus residents whose average age is 50 years. The city possesses a rural persuasion despite its proximity to the Twin Cities metro.

Sunfish Lake is named after its largest lake, which was once called Lake Thereau by the French settlers who arrived in the early to mid-19th century.
The city of Sunfish Lake was incorporated as a village in 1958 with a vision to preserve natural beauty and establish a sparsely populated area. It pursued a strategy that prohibits commercial development while maintaining a minimal government. Neighboring cities provide police and fire services.
Much of the city's history is alive today in its landscape; it is home to a large nature preserve, and much of the land has never been disturbed.
Sunfish Lake has high standards for its presence as a rural community, and new construction requires a 2.5-acre lot size. Additionally, much of the geography is considered seriously challenging in regards to development, with many wetlands and steep hills scattered throughout the countryside.

A total of nine public schools serve the city of Sunfish Lake. Atheneum Elementary School was rated as number 69 on its list of best elementary schools in the state. Additionally, Henry Sibley High School was ranked as number 48 on its list of best public high schools in Minnesota.
The entire city is a single-family residential zone, which means no commercial development is allowed. As it is, there is a single park, Mussar Park, open to the public.
The vast majority of land is private in Sunfish Lake, and only a few churches can be found on the outskirts of town.
